The Rapid City Flood Memorial, located within Memorial Park, stands
as a tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragic flood of 1972.
Memorial Park, which was developed and established as a memorial park
to the victims of the 1972 flood, is a fitting location for this memorial.
The Memorial Park area, prior to 1972, was a busy residential neighborhood
with homes and small businesses which were obliterated in the June 9,
1972 flood. Two hundred thirty-eight people lost their lives in this
flood and their names are etched permanently upon the bronze plaques
at the kiosk within the All American Rose Gardens. As part of this memorial,
south of the Civic Center, one will find a fountain, rose gardens, and
a small lake created for the enjoyment of all those living and visiting
in Rapid City. |
